Tortilla chips are usually my go-to at Mexican restaurants, especially if nothing else on the menu is vegan. The difficulty is always with the toppings and sauces, namely the lack of anything “creamy” which doesn’t involve dairy products. But look! Fento’s Vegan Nachos come with a variety of toppings, and creamy vegan sauce to perfect it.
Fento @ Food Hallen, Bellamyplein 51
Describing itself as “Healthy Mexican with a South Asian twist“, this omnivore food stand at the buzzing Food Hallen offers a number of vegan choices, including these Vegan Nachos. Vegan options are clearly labelled on their menu, and their website (https://www.thefento.com/) promotes their focus on organic, non-GMO ingredients.
The dish may look small (deceptive photo), but the toppings of black beans and salad leaves, and the variety of chilli and creamy sauces, makes this both filling and much yums. Just to caution, some of their chilli sauces are really spicy, and this is coming from a Thai with (what I thought was) high spice tolerance – the Fento staff do warn you of this though and you can always choose a less spicy version. I shared the nachos with my omnivore sister who couldn’t tell it was “vegan”, so it’s a good place to go with mixed diets and introduce them to vegan options. Food Hallen itself is also great for this, with many of the stalls offering at least one vegan option – will be back to try these soon.
